MFA's bespoke batteries for the Hamba

After 2 years of pilot testing green mobility solutions for last mile transport in rural Zimbabwe, we are convinced that we can bring disruptive transformational change to rural communities especially women. From trial & error on the ground, Mobility for Africa has designed bespoke battery and battery swapping charging station that aims to take the Hamba (our E-tricycle) further, is safe & tough for rough off road conditions & energy efficient.

Our dedicated CTO Gawain Badcock has worked with Ruichen Zhao & his amazing team at Fourier Energy to design it. The batteries should run 12,000 cycles, so after being used in the Hamba, can be recycled into our charging station as well as used for rural energy storage, giving us a secondlife. With our training of youth in how to manage & operate the battery swapping system we believe we can ensure they have a long-life & be fully recycled.

We now need to test & see how it works in reality. Everything is ready on the ground. We have 3 sites identified, eager small-scale producers who need it to help transport chickens, eggs and milk to increase their incomes & contribute the welfare of their families & a battery swapping model designed for fleets of up to 100 While the upfront costs of testing the batteries is high, we know that once we have a model the costs will come down, & the multiplier effect on the local economy will make it scalable, viable & sustainable.
