According to FAO, in Malawi, 80 percent of the population are farmers, with 75 percent operating small family farms. Agriculture, like many other countries in Southern Africa, is the backbone of the economy. Almost one-third of Malawi’s family farms are female headed, so women remain critical to food security. Yet, many rural communities remain far from viable markets to sell and increase their income. The average distance of smallholders from main road is around 23 km, a transport nightmare in a country where the ratio of vehicles per 1000 people is just 13. One of the lowest ratios in the world.
So we were honored to host a Malawian Government delegation organized by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) to learn about E-mobility. It was great opportunity as we seek to be leaders in SADC of rural E-mobility and rural mobile energy. The delegation included staff from the Malawi Energy Regulation Authority (MERA), Ministry of Energy-Malawi, @Malawi Ministry of Transport and their climate team. The day began with a tour of our tricycle and battery factory, along with a discussion on how to deliver shared tranpost solutions making electric tricycles accessible and affordable for rural communities, as well as understanding how our integrated battery technology and mini grid can bring both mobility and energy to help mechanize farming to improve productivity. In the afternoon, the delegation visited our Domboshava site, where they met our customers who drive the Hamba. Pauline Magaso shared how the Hamba has transformed her life, enabling her to support her family and send her deaf son to school. Trymore Vambe expressed his gratitude, stating that the Hamba has alleviated the strain of using a push-cart, allowing him to care more for his health and for his family. These stories highlight the profound impact of innovative mobility solutions on livelihoods.
