Mobility for Africa will be landing in Dubai for the World Expo this January to showcase the potential of bringing last mile green mobility to rural Africa. Under the theme of “connecting minds, creating the future” Expo 2020 Dubai, held from October 2021 to April 2022, is exploring ways to bring the world together to find solutions to the most critical global issues.
Mobility for Africa’s work to solve the enormous burden of last mile transport for women in rural Africa, will be featured in the Mobility Pavilion, named ‘Alif’, at Expo 2020 Dubai. Referring to the first letter of the Arabic alphabet, the name ‘Alif’ celebrates movement and human progress. The exhibit will reveal how Mobility for Africa uses solar energy, advances in battery technology and mobility-as-a-service to transform the lives of women living in rural communities by improving local economies and addressing gender inequality.
The exhibit will take visitors on an immersive journey that illustrates the burden that rural women in Zimbabwe face as they spend hours of their day carrying heavy loads and walking long distances to sustain their families’ needs. It will demonstrate how electric tricycles (Hambas), a rural fleet management system and a battery swapping model can provide sustainable and efficient mobility solutions. As part of the experience, visitors can discover more about the Hamba and its off-grid charging technology by taking it for a ride on the part underground, part open-air 330-metre track that features in the Mobility Pavilion.
“We are honoured to have this opportunity to take part in Expo 2020 and give attention to the rural mobility crisis that continues to zap the energy and time of so many women.” Shantha said. “It is exciting to be part of a global event that seeks to bring practical, green, inclusive, and sustainable solutions.”
Set to attract over 25 million visitors over the six months, the Expo will foster an inclusive, open and innovative global dialogue that explores ways to ensure a more sustainable future that is safer, cleaner and more equitable for everyone.
